Spider-Man 2 is one of Insomniac’s highest rated games to date, based on early reviews.

The review embargo for the PS5 exclusive lifted on Monday and critics have heaped praise on the title, with a number of reviewers going as far as to call it the greatest superhero game ever made.

At the time of publishing the game has a score of 91 on review aggregation site Metacritic, based on 120 reviews. According to our checks, that makes it Insomniac’s joint highest rated game ever.

Two of the studio’s previous games hold the same score on Metacritic. They are Spyro: Year of the Dragon, which was released for the original PlayStation in 2000, and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, which hit PS2 in 2004.

The first Spider-Man, which was originally released for PS4 in 2018, and its spin-off Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which debuted for PS4 and PS5 in 2020, have Metacritic scores of 87 and 85 respectively.

The studio’s only other PS5 release, 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, has a score of 88.

“Marvel Spider-Man 2 is an incredibly confident sequel and one of 2023’s best games,” according to VGC’s 5-star review.

“Incredibly fun to play, fast-paced and full of heart, it takes the best of the Spider-Man lore, and the best of Insomniac’s penchant for excellent gameplay sequences, and combines them for arguably the best Marvel game ever.”
