Netflix cuts staff from Night School Studio

Streaming giant Netflix has made layoffs at Night School Studio.

That’s according to Game Developer, which reports that a number of workers have been made redundant at the outfit, though these cuts will apparently not have an impact on the firm’s current line-up of content.

The layoffs were announced back in January and reportedly were a surprise to staff.

Netflix acquired Night School Studio back in 2021 as part of its entry into the games market.

“Of course, it’s a surreal honor to be the first games studio to join Netflix,” Night School co-founder Sean Krankel said when the studio was snapped up.

“Not only do we get to keep doing what we do, how we like to do it, but we get a front-row seat on the biggest entertainment platform in the world. The Netflix team has shown the utmost care for protecting our studio culture and creative vision.”

The streaming giant laying off staff likely is part of a change in strategy that has seen it close down its triple-A Blue studio. Games boss Mike Verdu has also moved into a new position overseeing – gag – generative AI. Epic veteran Alain Tascan has been appointed to lead Netflix’s games arm.
