At first glance, you could think that Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is the dark fantasy, action RPG of your dreams. It might be, but it is also a mobile-forward, open-world game a la Genshin Impact or Infinity Nikki. However, as any serious fan of those games can tell you, they get deep fast. Kingsroad also nails the franchise’s gritty fantasy look and appears to be a complex and thrilling action game, influenced by Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Monster Hunter. Even if you are skeptical, you can play the demo now and try it yourself. But you’ll need to act fast, because the demo is only available for a short time.
In Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, you play as the bastard child of a forgotten house from the north of Westeros. Called by Jon Snow, you must wander the open-world game in an attempt to muster the continent against the threat of the White Walkers. You’ll explore iconic locations from the show, as well as brand new places developed for the game itself.
You’ll also create your own character and select a class. Trade blows and counter attacks as a Knight, shred your foes with massive weapons as the Sellsword, or dance around your foes as the light-footed Assassin. In the full game, you’ll be able to team up with friends against high-level foes, like dragons, to win incredible gear and rewards.
If you aren’t a Game of Thrones fan or if you were turned off by the show’s infamous finale, Kingsroad might still have some appeal for you. For one, the game features an original story, with many brand new characters, alongside the well-known figures from the show. Or perhaps wandering gorgeous environments from the show’s glory days might awaken your nostalgia.

You can play the Game of Thrones Kingsroad demo on Steam from now until Monday, March 4 at 12 am PST / 4 am EST / 8 am GMT / 9 am CEST.
The full game is set to launch in Q2 2025, with an exact release date still yet to be announced.
